Frankly, my dear . . .

So – I love movies and while I probably have several “top five” films, this week's five favorites (with my favorite lines from each) are . . .

CLASSIC:
Gone With the Wind –
“Well, I guess I've done murder. I won’t think about that today, I’ll think about that tomorrow.”
“Askin' ain't gettin'.”

“WESTERN”:
Wyatt Earp –
“Remember this, all of you. Nothing counts so much as blood. The rest are just strangers.”
“My name is Wyatt Earp. It all ends now.”

ROMANCE:
Sense & Sensibility –
“Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds or bends with the remover to remove. Oh, no! It is an ever fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken.” (this is actually Shakespeare)
“Whatever his past actions, whatever his present course at least you may be certain that he loved you....” “But not enough....not enough.”

DRAMA:
Home for the Holidays –
“That’s a sporty necklace you got there Glady.” “Fruitloops.” “Froo . . .“
“Good evening . . . consult your directory.”

COMEDY:
Fletch –
“No, no, never, never.”
"Are you a cop?" “As far as you know.”

Don't you just LOVE a good movie escape now and then? (Especially when it involves a Clark Gable type who can effortlessly sweep you right off your feet.) Happy Friday!

Starlight Mint or Mint Chocolate Chip . . . either way, it's my favorite

At work we have Fun Friday. Every Friday around 3:30, we gather and have a quick activity - miniature bowling, darts, Pictionary, paper airplanes, etc... In conjunction with Fun Friday at work, I’m going to try a new thing on this silly blog – Five Fun Friday Favorites. Each week (in theory), I’ll list five favorites in one category or another.

This week’s five are Best Blind Dates. Yep, it’s true – not all blind dates are a bad experience – there are actually a few diamonds in the ruff, or in some cases – under the scruff (hahaha – I know, not terribly clever).

Here are 5 of the best blind dates I’ve been on:

TENNIS – My uncle lined me up with a kid from his ward – we played tennis at his club and then got ice cream

SUSHI – My sister-in-law lined me up with a guy who had his hair cut at her salon – we went for sushi and then got ice cream – at Nielsen’s Custard (very yummy esp. since it was the first sugar I’d had in years)

HOUSE "WINDOW SHOPPING" – A guy in my ward lined me up with his brother – we drove around looking at and talking about big houses and then we got some ice cream

BOWLING – My brother lined me up with a friend – we went bowling and the loser (me) bought ice cream – amazing shakes from Iceberg (ever tried double caramel?? Wow!!)

MOVIE – This one is not considered by some to have been a blind date, but I think it’s close enough to be included, plus it’s the best “blind date” I’ve been on – a friend at work lined me up – we went to a great movie, got ice cream (Maggie Moo’s), and then went for a drive

You may wonder, what made these seemingly ordinary activities great? Mostly it was the fact that the guys were all fun to talk to, but also . . . there was ICE CREAM.

(2 years, 3 months, 12 days and about 11 hours to mint chocolate chip heaven - but who's counting?)

Membership Has Its Privileges

One of my favorite books, The Hiding Place, describes an experience two sisters in a concentration camp have when they discover that fleas have infested their beds. After having a small freak out, they read a scripture in 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18, which says: “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” They weren't sure they could really be thankful for fleas, but followed the counsel and prayed expressing thanks for them anyway. They soon recognized actual blessings because of the fleas.

Being single is a flea for me. While I am in the midst of trying to exterminate this flea, I thought it might be a good idea to follow Paul’s counsel to the Thessalonians and express gratitude – so here are some things I like about being single:

1- Time: I pretty much do what I want when I want (workout, sleep, eat, work, shop, etc.) – I like doing what I want a lot – ever heard the Avril Lavigne song – “I Always Get What I Want”???
2- Movies: I can pick whatever movie I want to go see (a friend introduced me to the solo movie thing a while back and I like it – except for seeing Dark Knight alone which was LAME)
3- Money: I spend my money how I want (are you sensing control issues?) – if I want to buy ridiculously expensive 5” heels, I do
4- Travel: I can travel to places like Australia for 5 weeks if I feel like it (and have worked hard to save up enough $$ and vacation time)
5- Weekends: I can hang out with my mom – movie nights, shopping sprees, spa trips, etc.; and, go to Costco, watch John Wayne or sports with my dad and brothers – which are things I love to do
6- Home: My house looks exactly how I want it to – I think it is very pretty and very cozy; dirty dishes (there aren’t many of these) are almost never left in the sink, the toilet seat is NEVER left up, clothes are either in the hamper or hung up – not strewn about (unless I’m feeling lazy), no newspapers are left lying around (mainly cuz I don’t take the paper), and I have flowers everywhere
7- TV: “Sole possession of the remote control” (what movie is that from?)
8- Reading: I can read for hours without really neglecting anyone or feeling guilty
9- Kids: I can spoil my nieces and nephews at birthdays and Christmas, and I can enjoy spending time with them with no direct responsibility for any of the tough parent stuff
10- Food: No one eats the last bowl of Lucky Charms except me.

There you have it: the benefits of being in the Single Club. I would, of course, very happily give up or adjust all of these things for Mr. Right . . .
