There's a scene in Young Catherine, a movie about Catherine the Great, starring Julia Ormond, where the empress has died and the Grand Duke Peter, Catherine's husband, has broken with protocol and ordered the court to discontinue wearing the traditional black mourning garb.
When a black clad Catherine, enters the scene where Peter's court is dining, Peter demands to know why she has disobedied him, and she says, "I am told that black becomes me." Then she sits at the table and defies him again by saying, "And, I mourn. I mourn for a woman who loved Russia, and for the Russia she loved." Other than Count Gregory Orlov, the "black becomes me" scene is one of the best in the movie.
The thing is, who DOESN'T look better in black? I LOVE wearing it, and have been increasing the black portion of my wardrobe over the last four or five years. I have black everything - purses, coats, luggage, shoes, furniture, wallets, jewelry, clothes...I love black. See:
